NEWS OF THE TSCA CHAPTER
April 30 , 2014
The Maritime Center Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association is a group of individuals interested in small boats--their history, their construction and their use. All events are open to the public and are free.
The meeting of the TSCA Chapter will be Wednesday May 14
7 PM at the Buffalo Maritime Center at 90 Arthur Street
STEAM BENDING WOOD!!
The heating of wood in the moist environment of a steam jacket will make the wood pliable. Can you tie it in a knot? Maybe. What kind of woods will bend? Many. How long do they stay in the steam bath? Depends. Does it require expensive equipment? No. Can you safely do this at home? Yep!
There are better answers to all of these questions and more as Roger Allen and Stewart Duncan demonstrate the technique to make frames for canoes, power boats and sailboats, mast hoops and whatever you might have in mind. Oak, ash, mahogany, pine and even natural woods like grapevine will be demonstrated. Designing and building your own basic steam box and cooker that could be part of anyone’s set of tools is covered. Steam can be dangerous if not handled well. The precautions will be discussed.
The Program is Free and Open to the Public
